Six Ukraine postal workers killed and a further 16 injured in ‘terror’ strike

A furious Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday hit out at Russia after six postal workers were killed and a further 16 injured when a missile hit a mail distribution centre.

The Ukraine president said the workers were killed when the Nova Poshta sorting office in the north-western city of Kharkiv was hit.

He wrote on messaging service Telegram: “A Russian missile struck a post terminal. Ordinary civilian object. Unfortunately, there are killed.

“Pressure on the terrorist state must be increased. Every day, we must respond to Russian terror with our results on the frontlines. And we are doing exactly that.”

He warned: “Terror and murder will not get Russia anywhere. Terrorists will end up facing justice for everything they have done.”

Pictures from the scene of the attack, uploaded on Mr Zelensky’s account, showed the building with windows blown out.

Oleh Syniehubov, Kharkiv’s regional governor, said the victims all worked for the postal company. Police said 22 people were inside the building when the rocket struck.

Mr Syniehubov said the victims were aged between 19 and 42, with some suffering shrapnel wounds from the blast. Writing on Telegram, he said the private delivery company was “strictly a civilian site”, adding: “The Russians have inflicted more terror on Kharkiv’s peaceful population.”

Russia has not yet commented on the alleged missile strike, but has previously denied targeting civilians during its invasion of Ukraine.

Mr Syniehubov said seven people were in hospital in a “moderate condition” and seven men were in a “serious condition”.

Kharkiv, which is Ukraine’s second largest city, is only 19 miles from the border with Russia.

Earlier this month, its mayor Ihor Terekhov said Ukraine’s first underground school would be built in the city to allow children to safely continue their in-person education.

Elsewhere yesterday, there was a fresh blow for Vladimir Putin as a Russian military plane exploded as it took off from a remote airbase carrying a mystery cargo.

The Il-76 burst into flames on the runway before rolling off the strip as the inferno spread.

Footage showed the burning Russian defence ministry aircraft at Ayni airbase – also known as Gissar airbase – near Dushanbe, the capital of ex-Soviet republic Tajikistan.
