UK Weather: Sunshine and some showers
The UK could be weeks away from an Indian summer, with the Met Office admitting it is not entirely out of the question.
The country has basked in a wave of hot weather in September – with another short and sweet mini-heatwave potentially hitting many regions this weekend.
As of next week, however, the tides may turn thanks to Hurricane Lee – as forecasters predict a potentially unsettled finish to the month.
But before anyone puts away their shorts and t-shirts and gets out the mulled wine – there’s a chance the summer isn’t fully over yet.
The Met Office long-range forecast indicates a surge of high pressure, which could bring some welcomed warm weather at the start of the autumn.

For the rest of September – specifically September 18 to 27, it says: “This is likely to be a predominantly unsettled period beginning with fairly widespread rain or thundery showers, the latter especially for parts of England and Wales.
“These will be tied into a warm, humid air mass which should clear to the east early in this period. Thereafter, more of an Atlantic influence looks most likely, with the potential for quite deep areas of low pressure run close by or even over the UK, bringing with them the risk of strong winds and heavy rain.
“How this evolves is currently very uncertain and tied into systems currently in the subtropical Atlantic. After a warm start to the period, especially in the south, temperatures generally look to be close to average, although some further warm spells are likely at times.”

Met Office’s Indian summer verdict
The forecaster says it doesn’t use the phrase “Indian summer” due to the fact it is not a meteorological term. Instead, its forecasters use words such as “summer-like weather” or “autumnal warmth”.
While experts say “confidence remains low for late September and early October”, its outlook from September 28 to October 11 has a tone of optimism.
It says in full: “Confidence remains low in late September and early October; however there are signals emerging of low pressure often being centred to the west of the UK, with higher pressure close to or just east of the UK.
“This indicates a greater chance of more in the way of settled conditions. There is an increased chance of some late season warm spells, with above average temperatures most likely.”
