The attacks on Odesa came after Ukraine claimed that its missile strike on the Crimean headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea navy fleet last week killed 34 officers, including fleet commander Admiral Viktor Sokolov. However, Sokolov was today seen among other senior officers attending a video conference with Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
Meanwhile, during fighting in the Zaporizhzhia region in the southeast, the Russian army dropped five aerial bombs on Robotyne, a town Ukraine took in August in its slow-moving counteroffensive. Although neither side has released casualty figures, the counteroffensive is believed to have taken a heavy toll on both sides and it has been devastating to the towns and villages where fighting has raged.
New aerial video footage of Klishchiivka, on the outskirts of Bakhmut, shot with a drone for The Associated Press shows how the battle has turned the village in eastern Ukraine into a pile of rubble after months of fierce fighting. The footage shot two days ago shows the village in ruins with destroyed Russian tanks and military vehicles littering the main road. Barely a building remains intact in the village that was once home to almost 400 people.
However, in an address to the nation on Tuesday night, Zelensky vowed to ramp up its attacks on Putin’s forces. And he suggested that Ukraine had received new intelligence – and now knew where it must strike Russia to cause the most impact on Putin’s war machine.

The President said he had received “a separate informative intelligence report on the situation in the Russian military-industrial complex”. Zelensky said: “We clearly see the areas where pressure on Russia needs to be increased so that terrorist capabilities do not grow.
“Sanctions are not enough. There will be more. There will be more of our own, Ukrainian actions against the terrorist state. As long as Russia’s aggression continues, Russia’s losses must be tangible.”
Regarding how the war itself is currently going, Zelensky said: “A report on the day. I held a meeting of the Staff. Several key points. The first is the actual situation at the front, our offensive and defensive operations. Important reports on the east and south. On the destruction of logistics and headquarters of the occupiers. There are good details. Loud details. I thank all the Ukrainian warriors who distinguished themselves!”
And he also vowed the Ukraine would secure the munitions it needs to force Russia into retreat. Zelensky said: “”The second issue is the supply of shells. This is a topic we are dealing with on a daily basis. Supplies from partners. Searching for new opportunities in the world — we know exactly how to secure supplies. And we are gradually increasing the volume of Ukrainian production. This is one of our top priorities.”
Elsewhere in his speech, Zelensky updated the nation on his intention to bring Ukraine into the European Union. He said: “Today I met with the President of the National Council of Austria, who was on a visit to Ukraine.
“We discussed in detail our efforts to get the world majority to join the implementation of the Peace Formula. And I appreciate Austria’s willingness to join in.”
Of course, we also discussed our European course. I spoke about Ukraine’s implementation of seven recommendations of the European Commission. And we rely on Austria’s continued support for Ukraine’s European integration.”
