Presicce, a charming commune located in the province of Lecce, Italy, is making headlines worldwide for its innovative approach to combatting depopulation – but paying people a staggering £26,000 (€30,000) to move there.
This picturesque town – part of the larger municipality Presicce-Acquarica comprising of the two towns – known for its typical Iralian architecture and mild climate, is just minutes away from stunning beaches, making it an attractive place to live.
However, despite these appealing features, Presicce has been experiencing a decline in its population.
In response to this challenge, the town has introduced unique financial incentives to lure new residents and revitalise the community.
Together the two towns, Presicce and Acquarica have a population of around 9,000 residents, but only half live in the older part of the community Presicce.

To address the depopulation issue of Presicce, the town has turned to a creative solution: offering substantial financial incentives to individuals willing to relocate there. Those who choose to make Presicce their new home can receive up to a maximum of €30,000.
Local councillor Alfredo Palese told CNN in 2022: “There are many empty homes in the historical centre built before 1991 which we would like to see alive again with new residents.
“It is a pity witnessing how our old districts full of history, wonderful architecture and art are slowly emptying.
As of now, Presicce boasts a population of just over 5,000 residents.

“We will be offering up to €30,000 to people willing to move here and buy one of these abandoned dwellings.
“The total funding will be split in two: it will go partly into buying an old home and partly into restyling it if needed.”

However, there’s a catch to receiving this financial support. Recipients must commit to renovating one of the unused houses within the town’s municipal boundaries.
This strategic move by the local administration aims to halt the depopulation trend, boost the local economy, and attract new residents to the area.
