‘Rage room’ visitors strip off for ‘primal’ sex sessions when smashing TVs

People who run rage rooms say an increasing number of visitors are copping off with each other in their facilities.

Rage rooms are places where people can pay to be allowed to smash various items including TVs, plates and furniture. They are billed as places where people release pent-up anger in a safe environment.

However, owners of various rage rooms in the US say some customers are getting carried away with the freedom, taking it to a whole new level.

Corey Holtam, the owner of Wreck Room Las Vegas, told USA Today: "Every once in a while, people do get a little handsy. I've had some customers lay down together in a room filled with broken glass, so maybe there's a danger aspect to it. Being in that atmosphere, it's super weird, so I think people tend to go to a primal place."

Neko Farmer, the founder of REKT in Carrollton, Georgia, said "heavy petting and intense make-out sessions" occur at least twice a month. He has even seen customers strip to their underwear.

Experts say there is a link between taking a baseball bat to an old TV and wanting to get down and dirty. Justin Lehmiller, a research fellow with The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, told USA Today that both aggressive and sexual behaviours activate our fight-or-flight response and release adrenaline.

This also increases blood flow around the body, including to the genitals. So people's desire to bonk in rage rooms is likely due to the environment they are in, rather than sexual chemistry with whoever else is there.

Lehmiller said: "If you visited a rage room with your partner and then went straight home and had sex, it's likely that the sex would be more intense than usual due to the fact that the emotional response for the earlier situation hadn't fully cleared from your system."

Rage Room Long Island CEO Michael Hellman told USA Today that his staff have even seen visitors engaging in sexual activity outside the venue.
