BOULDER — Shedeur Sanders is even more careful about his phone number than he is with passing windows. But of all the congratulatory texts the CU’s new QB 1 landed after piloting the Buffs to a 45-42 win at then-No. 17 TCU, one stood out.
“Don’t be satisfied,” it read.
The sender?
Tom Brady.
“It (was) cool,” the CU quarterback said Tuesday when asked about getting a shout from the NFL icon, who retired earlier this year. “It was cool hearing from him, knowing he’s still watching and stuff like that.”
Sanders flashed some Brady-esque moments in his Buffs debut, throwing for a school-record 510 yards, notching four touchdowns and converting both of his fourth-down opportunities.
The second, which came with CU down 42-38, turned into a 46-yard catch-and run by speedy tailback Dylan Edwards for what became the game-winning score.
The Buffs’ junior signal-caller is tight with Brady on both the football and business fronts. Sanders, son of CU coach Deion Sanders, sports an NIL deal with Brady’s apparel brand.
“Just working with (Brady), it really helped me just understand,” recalled Sanders, who completed 38 of 47 passes in his first game for the Buffs.
“Don’t focus on the good things we did … we’re going to do that, regardless. Focus on the bad things, focus on the things that we (weren’t) able to do it at a high level. (Go) improve that.”
Thanks to the video-game-like stat lines put up by Sanders, Edwards (135 receiving yards, three touchdowns), wideouts Xavier Weaver (118 receiving yards) and Jimmy Horn Jr. (117 receiving yards) and two-way star Travis Hunter (119 receiving yards, one interception), the Buffs vaulted into the AP Top 25 on Tuesday. It’s the first time CU has been in the national polls this early since September 2003.
“I mean, this (isn’t) my first time here,” Sanders said of the attention. “We had it at Jackson (State). It’s just now, it’s just a bigger stage, a bigger level to where it’s on ESPN and (on) TV all the time, like all day.
“But I don’t really (follow it). I’m off social media. Not too many people have my phone number … so it’s like, I don’t see none of that stuff … I’m disconnected from that type of stuff because I know what it could lead to.”
