Tata’s new 1.5-litre TGDi 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine was showcased at Auto Expo 2023.
Tata Motors recently launched the updated Harrier and Safari. Both SUVs are currently available with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. However, the carmaker plans to introduce a turbo-petrol engine option in about a year’s time.
Tata Motors had showcased its new 1.5-litre TGDi 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine at Auto Expo 2023. This unit puts out 168 BHP and 280 Nm and could be paired with a 6-speed manual and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
Adding a petrol engine to the mix would allow Tata Motors to offer the Harrier and Safari at a slightly lower price point. At present, the Harrier range starts at Rs 15.49 lakh, while the Safari is priced from Rs 16.19 lakh (ex-showroom).
Rival brands like Mahindra, MG and Hyundai already offer petrol versions of their mid-size SUVs. The Scorpio-N and XUV700 are available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, while the MG Hector is powered by a 1.5-litre unit. The Hyundai Alcazar also gets a 2.0-litre petrol engine option.
