Scotland’s first minister Humza Yousaf has been whacked with a huge legal bill after the Scottish government made an embarrassing climb down.

The UK Government is due to bill the government in Holyrood for £150,000 in legal costs over a court battle related to controversial gender reforms.

In a statement, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said the UK Government would seek the money after it blocked the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill.

The Bill aimed to simplify the process transgender people could obtain a gender recognition certificate and make it easier for them to legally change their gender.

Following the block, the Scottish government has confirmed that it will not appeal the Court of Session’s ruling that the gender legislation was blocked lawfully.

STV News reported that Mr Jack said: “I welcome the Scottish government’s acceptance of the court’s judgment…which upheld my decision to prevent their gender recognition legislation from becoming law.

“The Scottish government chose to pursue this litigation in spite of the cost to the taxpayer. These resources would have been better spent addressing the priorities of people in Scotland – such as growing the economy, cutting NHS waiting lists and improving our children’s education.

“The UK Government now intends to lodge an application with the court seeking our expenses in defending this matter.”

However, while the Scottish government won’t appeal the Court of Sessions’ ruling, in a statement to the Holyrood parliament Scotland’s social justice secretary Shirley Anne-Somerville confirmed that it won’t withdraw the proposed laws.

Ms Somerville said that the plans would be put on hold and she added that she hoped future ministers would work to have the Section 35 order rescinded.

Ms Somerville said she understood that many transgender people would be upset by the ruling but tried to reassure them that the Scottish government would keep working for them.

She claimed: “To them, I say this: The Scottish government will never waver in our commitment to your rights. You deserve to be respected, included and supported.

“You are not a threat and you will always be able to live your lives free from prejudice and abuse in the type of Scotland we want to see. We will continue to work towards a society that is equal and fair and where people can live as they are, just as we will continue to protect the democratic pillars of this, Scotland’s parliament.”
