A Christmas tree in a Swiss city has been pulled down for being “too ugly”, according to local reports.

The tree was erected outside La Chaux-de-Fonds’ train station, but after a social media backlash it was removed and composted.

Critics branded the festive fixture, which did not even make it into December, “horrible” and “sad”.

Describing how the sorry-looking tree made them feel, one social media user said: “I hesitate between deformed and rickety”.

Another added dryly its sparse leaves are “perhaps to symbolise the storm” which hit the city on July 24.
