Forget Brooklyn, New York or London’s Camden – there’s a neighbourhood thousands of miles away from both places that has been voted the ‘coolest in the world’.

Laureles, in Medellín, Colombia, South America, topped a recent TimeOut poll beating competition from neighbourhoods in London, Paris, New York and Los Angeles.

Medellín is the second-largest city in the country and boasts a population of over 2.5 million, with people from the city sometimes known as Paisas, meaning coffee growers.

The Spanish heritage background of Paisas is said to mean the people speak softly and quickly, smile easily, and love music, poetry, soccer, bargaining in the markets, and parties.

According to TimeOut Laureles is famous for a nightlife strip known as La 70 “where every bar and restaurant floor can turn into a dance floor with the right song”.

The area is also home to the local football and concert venue, Estadio Atanasio Girardot.

The neighbourhood has a “laidback” reputation – despite the assumption that is is noisy and hectic due to the population size.

The La 70 area boasts countless coffee shops, parks and yoga studios – creating a relaxing environment all around.

Laureles still has a traditional Colombian neighbourhood feel, TimeOut reports, despite its growing popularity – while one minor change is that more residents speak English than before – due to its growth in popularity.
