Russia has launched a terrorist investigation after an “improvised explosive device” knocked 19 carriages of a goods train off its tracks.

Sabotage attacks have increased in Russia since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine and Moscow often blames Kyiv for the attacks, although it has not yet done so for this incident.

Railways are a particularly popular target as delaying goods from travelling to the frontlines can significantly impact Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

The Russia investigative committee said: “According to the investigation, at 07.12 on November 11, 2023, an improvised explosive device exploded. As a result, 19 wagons of the freight train were derailed.”

The explosion occurred in the Ryzan Region of Russia southeast of the capital. Moscow Railways said the blast was caused by “the intervention of unauthorized persons” and that it left one employee injured.

Ukraine isn’t the only actor fighting against Vladimir Putin’s group in Russia. Several pro-Ukraine anti-Putin Russian paramilitary groups operate out of Ukraine and carry out sabotage in Russia.

In June of this year, the deputy commander of the Freedom of Russia Legion – callsign Caesar – told Daily Express US that his group operating in Ukraine also had partisans inside Russia that would continue to carry out attacks.

He said: “There is a very big resistance [movement] from our Legion, which is present inside Russia. It is our guerrilla movement doing some acts of military sabotage: burning war commissariats, destroying railways in our fight against Putin.”

Ukraine and Russia are now battling for position on the frontlines as winter approaches. The so-called mud season has begun with autumn rains hampering troop movements but still, Moscow’s forces are pressing an attack in eastern Ukraine.
