As the temperature drops and with Christmas just around the corner, it’s the ideal time to book a cosy winter staycation. The team at Airbnb have shared this year’s most popular destinations.

While city hotspots such as Bath also made the staycation hotlist, a pretty seaside town on the Northumberland coast was also trending.

Around 20km north of Alnwick in Northumberland, Seahouses was one of this year’s top trending staycation destinations.

Nearby Bamburgh might get most of the accolades but that doesn’t mean people should miss out on Seahouses.

A long-time fishing village, Seahouses is still home to a smoking site today. Swallow Fish have been smoking their fish onsite since 1843.

Tourists can also visit the idyllic Farne Islands from Seahouses. While visitors can’t currently go ashore on the islands due to avian flu, they can still take a boat trip around the islands.

If they’re lucky, visitors might spot dolphins or seals in the water around the Farne Islands, which is home to huge colonies of seabirds.
