The Russian Army has started testing a new kamikaze drone with an automated targeting system ahead of “mass synchronised swarm attacks", according to reports.

The Izdeliye-53 is based on the Russian-made Lancet and reportedly has an automated targeting system that can identify different types of targets to increase the probability of a successful strike.

At present, the drone can only carry a payload of between three to five kilograms. Even still, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports that sources say the military "have stated that the military is currently testing the drones for synchronised mass swarm attacks."

"The Izdeliye-53 drone is equipped with an automatic guidance system capable of distinguishing target types and increasing the success rates of attacks," reports ISW, adding that testing started on October 21.

The same organisation reported that Russian forces recently used new Italmash UAVs (also known as Izdeliye-54) that sounds like a lawnmower in a drone strike near Kyiv.
