The Met Office has shared its verdict on a possible “polar” front bound for the UK in a week’s time.

Meteorologists have recently warned the country faces a big freeze following Storm Babet, with temperatures set to drop over the last week of October.

The final days of the month and the first few of November could see drastic changes as the mercury dips below zero for the first time since early 2023.

Temperatures could plummet as low as -6C, some maps have shown, with snow on the cards over high ground in Scotland.

But the Met Office has stopped short of confirming the first snowfall of late 2023 – a predicted move given the lack of confidence over longer-range forecasts.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesman, said additional wind and rain is more likely in the coming weeks.

He said: “For the remainder of October and into November we expect the Atlantic to continue to be a driving force in the forecast.

“Typically, this suggests a period of unsettled weather with potential for bouts of wind and rain.

“In between these spells, it is always possible for a calmer period where slightly cooler conditions can get a brief hold, bringing overnight frosts or lower-than-average temperatures.”

“However, there isn’t anything in the forecast which suggests a prolonged or much-colder than normal period of weather before early November.”

Some of that unsettled weather is already here, as it appears Storm Babet isn’t quite finished with the UK, with rain falling hard and fast across some areas.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for 12 areas today, as heavy rain poses a potential threat to life in northwest England.

While the rain isn’t a direct product of Babet, it could exacerbate flooding caused by the storm last week. The agency has said many of the affected areas would be left vulnerable as up to two inches of rain falls between 3am and 4pm.
