Russia is carrying out \u201cintense attacks\u201d deep behind the frontlines in a brutal retaliation to Ukraine\u2019s recent counteroffensive successes and long range strikes in occupied Crimea, the British MoD has claimed.<\/p>\n

In its latest update on X, formerly Twitter, the MoD described the intensity as \u201cunusual\u201d.<\/p>\n

Intense missile campaigns are not rare – in May this year, the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv was targeted 17 times, including once in the middle of the day – but the MoD suggested this last week of attacks may be the start of another brutal operation.<\/p>\n

After Ukraine-wide strikes yesterday (September 21), the country\u2019s electricity grid operator suggested it could mark the start of a Russian winter missile campaign, one that they carried out aggressively last year.<\/p>\n

The early-morning wave of missile strikes on what\u2019s known as the International Day of Peace was the largest in more than a month and came during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s multi-day trip to the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last four days, both Russia and Ukraine have experienced unusually intense attacks deep behind their lines,\u201d the MoD said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been reports of explosions at Russian logistics sites, air bases and command posts in Crimea, the Krasnodar region, and near Moscow.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia has launched long-range strikes at targets across Ukraine repeatedly over the last week. This unusual intensity is likely partially in response to the incidents in Russia and Crimea.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the ground battle relatively static, each side is seeking advantage by striking through their adversary\u2019s strategic depth.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the past few weeks, Ukrainian forces on the ground breached Russia\u2019s first – and main – defensive line in western Zaporizhzhia.<\/p>\n

Geolocated footage showed Russians firing on Ukrainians in Western armoured vehicles near Verbove, evidence that Kyiv forces had pushed through the anti-tank traps and were fighting in close combat.<\/p>\n

It is part of a campaign to widen the salient around Rotobyne and push towards the Sea of Azov by way of severing the Russian land bridge between Crimea and the South Military District command post in Rostov-on-Don.<\/p>\n

Concurrent attacks in Crimea struck Sevastopol multiple times, including an attack on Russia\u2019s Black Sea Fleet headquarters this morning.<\/p>\n
