Peugeot has released UK pricing and specifications for its all-electric E-308 hatchback, joining the range alongside its refreshed E-208 supermini and the all-new E-3008 crossover. Twinned with the petrol-powered 308, and sharing much of its hardware with the all-electric Vauxhall Astra Electric, it will land in the UK in three trims, starting from £40,050.

The base-level Allure model will open the range and is £255 more than the entry-level Astra equivalent. The E-308 comes with a good level of standard equipment including 18-inch wheels, heated front seats and steering wheel, a reversing camera and Peugeot’s high-spec double-touchscreen infotainment system.

Above this sits the top-spec GT variant, at £42,250, building on the Allure’s kit by adding features that include Matrix LED headlights, Alcantara-trimmed sports seats, more premium exterior styling and a 3D digital dash that uses clever projection technology.

The E-308 is based on the Stellantis EMP2 platform, just like the Vauxhall Astra Electric. It’s the same architecture that underpins other Peugeot models, such as the 508 saloon, previous generation 3008 SUV and, of course, the internal-combustion engined 308 models. With the arrival of E-308, Peugeot’s family hatchback will become the first car in the Stellantis group to be offered with pure combustion, plug-in hybrid or pure-electric power, when it arrives in June 2023.

The E-308’s 54kWh battery will offer a new chemical composition compared with older systems, and delivers a claimed range of 257 miles, with estimated efficiency of 4.8 miles per kWh. The battery can also be recharged from 20 to 80 per cent in less than 25 minutes using a 100kW charger. This feeds a front-mounted e-motor that produces 156bhp and 260Nm of torque.

Peugeot has updated most of its range this year with new Active Premium+ and Allure Premium+ trim levels and we expect a similar range structure for the e-308 in 2023. Every e-308 model will come with a selection of drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport). A ‘Brake’ button will increase the aggressiveness of the brake regeneration system to recover more energy back to the battery.

The Peugeot E-308 joins an increasingly crowded marketplace of family-sized electric hatchbacks, from in-house rivals including the aforementioned Vauxhall Astra Electric to the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born, plus numerous crossovers such as the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV and the popular MG4. And with more rivals on their way, it’s only due to get even more competitive.
