Detectives investigating the murders of an elderly couple in Chelmsford have found human remains.<\/p>\n
Virginia McCullough, 35, is accused of murdering John and Lois McCullough, both in their 70s, between August 21, 2018, and September 15, 2023. The couple are believed to be the defendant\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n
Essex Police said today (Monday, September 18) the remains of two people were found at an address in Pump Hill. They are believed to belong to John and Lois.<\/p>\n
The discovery came after reports of concerns for the welfare of two people in their 70s on September 13, police said. <\/p>\n
Investigative work is continuing at the property. <\/p>\n

An Essex Police spokesperson said: \u201cAs a result of the extensive work carried out by a dedicated team, we have recovered the remains of two people from the address.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough formal identification is yet to take place, Essex Police believe these to be the remains of John McCullough and Lois McCullough, both aged in their 70s.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs part of work connected to this investigation, officers are continuing to search addresses in and around Pump Hill.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis policing presence is expected to continue for the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: \u201cThis continues to be an incredibly complex investigation.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur work will continue throughout the coming days, as our specialist officers and staff continue to piece together all elements of this matter.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficers will carry out work at addresses in Pump Hill throughout the coming days.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would continue to urge against speculation as these inquiries continue.<\/p>\n
\u201cA family is grieving the loss of two relatives and officers are supporting them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Virginia McCullough appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court earlier today. Essex police said she had been charged with the murders.<\/p>\n
She appeared in a grey prison-issue tracksuit and spoke only to confirm her personal details. McCullough was not asked to enter any pleas.<\/p>\n
She was remanded in custody and will appear at Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday (September 19).<\/p>\n
