Around 5 inches (13cm) of snow is expected with the potential to disrupt Friday morning’s commute. Rich Bann, a forecaster with the US Weather Prediction Center said that the wind is likely to be very cold.

He said: “You are going to have a pretty good, biting wind chill.”

The storm is likely to start late on Thursday evening and continue until mid-morning on Friday according to The National Weather Service.

Winter storm warnings and weather advisories stretch over a wide area from Kentucky to Maine.

According to weather modelling the storm is likely to peak just as the morning commute starts.

Winds will gust from 15 to 30 miles per hour.

Around 1 inch of snowfall is likely to fall in only an hour.

There have been warnings of possible power cuts by Consolidated Edison Inc, the utility company that serves much of New York City.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. 

However, Craig Cipriano, New York City Transit Interim President said Subways and buses will be running.

He said: “Subway crews will be out before, during and after the storm to make sure staircases and platforms are clear.

“We will continue to carefully monitor road conditions and will be working with our partners at the New York City Department of Sanitation to make sure bus routes are passable.”

New Jersey will be under a state of emergency starting at 10pm when snow is expected to start with restrictions on commercial trucks on interstates.

However, the storm is expected to blow through the New York region quickly with rain washing away the snow from Sunday evening onwards.
