Uber Eats driver whacked with bolt cutters by thugs trying to steal moped

An Uber Eats driver picking up an order from McDonald's was hit across the head with bolt cutters as attackers tried to steal her moped as she left.

Liam Solomon, of Kesteven Square, Sunderland, and his accomplice "lay in wait" for their victim to leave the fast-food restaurant on King Street, South Shields before they approached her from two directions on March 22.

Shocking CCTV footage shows the thugs repeatedly striking her with the tool in a bid to steal her vehicle but she managed to hold on to it long enough for a passer-by to scare the attacker away.

The victim suffered a cut to her finger and damage to her bike but fortunately, her head was protected from the blow by her helmet.

She has since been left anxious about continuing in her delivery work following the incident, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Omar Ahmad told the court: "She left and the defendant was seen to follow her. She returned to her scooter and pushed it up the street.

"The defendant and the other male walked away and he is seen to change his top. The two males then run back up the street in her direction, while she is pushing the scooter and apprehend her from separate directions.

"The defendant grabbed the scooter and was attempting to pull it away from her and a struggle ensued between them.

"The other male, with bolt croppers, began striking her to the head. Thankfully she was wearing a crash helmet at the time.

"She lifted her hands to protect herself and this caused her a one-inch laceration to her finger."

The 19-year-old defendant is said to have managed to get on the moped but a witness then approached and was shouting, which sent them running, leaving the bike behind.

He then changed his clothes before he got on the Metro at South Shields station only to be arrested a few days later.

However, his accomplice has never been caught.

Solomon, who has 60 previous convictions including a suspended sentence for theft, shoplifting and possessing cannabis from a year ago, admitted assault with intent to rob.

He also admitted stealing a motorbike, worth £3,000 and two mountain bikes from a yard in Sunderland in the same month.

Jamie Adams, defending, said the death of Solomon's father severely impacted his life but he has made good progress in prison on remand.

Judge Robert Spragg sentenced him to three years and ten months behind bars, saying: "A food delivery driver on a moped was targeted by you and an accomplice.

"You lay in wait for her, you changed your top to a darker one to make yourself less visible and you grabbed the scooter and pulled it away from her.

"A struggle took place and your accomplice struck her with a pair of bolt cutters on the head. Fortunately, she had a helmet on but she lifted her hands to protect herself and sustained a laceration."
