Twitter CEO Elon Musk has shown his merciful side after refusing to ban an account on the platform that tracks the movement of the billionaire's private jet.

After making it clear that he wants to prioritise free speech on the social media site, he's so far stayed true to his word, even towards the account that he's labelled as being a security threat on several occasions.

On the subject, Musk tweeted: “My commitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk."

The @ElonJet Twitter account was created by UCF (University of Central Florida) student Jack Sweeney and has so far amassed almost 500,000 followers.

In response to Musk's doubling down on the importance of free speech, Sweeney wrote: “Thank you backing your commitment to free speech. Overwhelmingly the followers of my account are supporters and admirers of your endeavours."

According to a report by The Post, Musk had offered Sweeney £4.3k ($5k) last year to delete the account but the offer was swiftly countered with a response of £43.4k ($50k).

Musk commented on the situation saying: “I don’t love the idea of being shot by a nutcase".

Musk said he would consider the counter-offer but soon recoiled from negotiations saying that it didn't "feel right".

Sweeney said that since Musk's takeover of Twitter, he hasn't heard from him and insisted he continues to run the account and claimed "I'm not going to stop".

“I’m not worried now that Musk owns Twitter. If he banned ElonJet, the news would be all over it, so I don’t think he will do it. That being said, there’s always a chance.

"I put out a poll recently, and some of my followers think my account will be banned,” Sweeney wrote.
