Trump’s top coronavirus expert self-isolates following contact with infected staff member

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is also one of the US’ coronavirus task force’s most prominent faces. He told CNN he will begin a “modified quarantine” after making a “low risk” contact with the infected person.

The “low risk” estimation means Dr Fauci was not in close proximity to the person while the person was known to be positive for the virus.

He is not doing a full quarantine like Dr Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr Hahn with a person who tested positive for coronavirus, an FDA official confirmed to CNN on Friday.

Dr Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will also self-quarantine for a fortnight after he was came into contact with a person at the White House who tested positive for coronavirus, a CDC spokesperson confirmed to CNN.

The person Dr Hahn or Dr Redfield were exposed to has not been identified by officials.

However, it is known that Katie Miller, the press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence, tested positive on Friday.

She has been understood to often attend White House coronavirus task force meetings.

In his “modified quarantine,” Dr Fauci will be working from home, wearing a mask constantly, for two weeks.

He said he might also go to his office at the National Institutes of Health where he is on his own.

He also will be tested for the virus every day, he said, adding that he was tested yesterday and the result was negative.

If he is summoned to the White House or Capitol Hill, he will go while taking every precaution, he said.

Dr Fauci will testify at a Senate hearing about the pandemic next week.

Dr Redfield and Dr Hahn will virtually attend the hearing by video conference, the committee’s chairman, Sen. Lamar Alexander, confirmed on Saturday.

Dr Fauci is expected to attend while wearing a mask, a source in Alexander’s office told CNN.

If the events change and Dr needs to testify remotely, the committee will adjust to make it possible.

Meanwhile, the White House sent out an email to all staff members on Friday with he subject ”Strong Precautions We Are Taking,” about the steps the White House is taking to prevent coronavirus more coronavirus in the wake of Ms Miller’s diagnosis, an official said.

A copy reviewed by CNN shows the memo containing a series of guidance like working from home as much as possible, reporting travel and keeping track of potential symptoms.

The note said “high-touch points” in the White House and Eisenhower Executive Office Building, an office building near the White House where many staffers work, will receive “heightened levels of cleaning.”

The day before the email was sent out, on Thursday, White House employees received a different note informing them that they would be questioned, upon entry, about their symptoms, as well as undergoing mandatory temperature checks to enter into the White House compound.

Anyone who declares having symptoms may have to undergo further checks or barred entry altogether, according to the memo.

Neither note discusses wearing masks.
