Three teenagers have been arrested after a bizarre coronavirus-inspired assault in which an elderly couple were allegedly “coughed at” in the street.
The trio, aged 16, 18 and 19 were questioned on suspicion of actual bodily harm, affray and criminal damage after the incident on Friday afternoon.
It has been alleged that the teenagers approached a man and a woman in the seventies and coughed in their faces.
A man in his thirties who was passing by attempted to intervene and there was “an altercation” which left the man with bruising and a women in her seventies with a black eye.
Hertfordshire Police said the elderly woman was taken to hospital as a precaution but was later discharged.
A car that the woman was driving was also reportedly damaged in the incident.
The suspects were questioned and later released under investigation.
Herts Police called for anyone with information to contact them but reminded the public that this is a live investigation and posting details on social media about those involved could have a significant impact on proceedings.
It has also come to police’s attention that there is footage circulating on social media and police requested that people did not share the video online.
There has been a rash of antisocial events connected with the coronavirus outbreak.
