A teacher has been accused of sending a teenage pupil a string of sexually explicit photos and videos.
Stephanie Carafa, 32, allegedly used social media app Snapchat to send the content before asking for pictures of the 13-year-old boy.
They surfaced after pupils began to distribute them among themselves, it is alleged.
According to Northjersey.com, police learned about Stephanie Carafa's alleged texts with the boy through a separate investigation of students who were reportedly circulating explicit photos of high school girls.
It came when detectives started to quiz the students about an alleged underage sex pictures ring, before some students claimed they also had pictures and videos of a middle school teacher.
At a Friday court hearing it was revealed that Carafa, accused of groping and sending explicit messages to the 13-year-old, taught the alleged victim in the third, fifth and seventh grades.
Kristin DeMarco, an assistant prosecutor, said: “Naked photos, sexual conversations and even meetings after school in her classroom did in fact occur.” The teacher is on paid leave.
The teacher's lawyer, Frank Carbonetti, reportedly claimed that the photos in evidence don’t show Carafa’s face and could have been altered or hacked from her phone.
He added: “There’s been no forensic evidence provided whatsoever on where these pictures came from, how they were received.”
Carafa is charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of aggravated criminal sexual contact.
It is claimed by prosecutors that as well as sharing explicit photos and videos, Carafa allegedly groped the boy over his clothes and allowed him to touch her over hers.
The arrest warrant claims the pair would have lengthy discussions on Snapchat about her sexual preferences, DeMarco said.
DeMarco said the boy saved the videos under a file in the app called “My Eyes Only,” but deleted them over the summer.
Over the course of four to seven after-school meetings, Carafa allegedly called the boy into her classroom and asked that he shut the door and close the blinds, DeMarco said. There, they would kiss and touch each other inappropriately, she said.
The boy confessed to the relationship when he was brought in for questioning related to the photos of high school girls being circulated.
After she was released from custody on bail, her father, Emil, who used to be the local mayor for years, told the paper: “I love my daughter very much and I love my family… and I believe in the process of the law.”
