One Twitter user responded by posting several people they claimed had been “killed by Turkish police” – included Nihat Kazanhan, who died in the city of Cizre in 2015, with police officer Mehmet Nurbaki Gocmez jailed for 13 years and four months as as result.
Another shared a link to a story about Tracy Lynn Brown, a 48-year-old American woman who died in 2015 after being restrained by police officers.
Four officers were convicted and jailed in 2018.
Others drew attention to Turkey’s human rights record.
One, Harry Theocharous, said: “Mr Erdogan this is one of the only statements I fully agree with and surely condemn this brutal inhumane act.

“Police brutality however does not only occur in Minneapolis or anywhere else in the US, but in your country too on a daily basis.
“No matter where, it should be stopped.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz ordered the National Guard to help restore order after the first two days of disturbances triggered by the death of Mr Floyd, 46.
Protesters gathered outside the Third Precinct police station building were forced to retreat after tear gas and rubber bullets were fired at them from the roof.
However, they returned and set fire to the building later.
Protesters were later spotted on the roof.
Fire officials have said 16 buildings were torched on Wednesday night.
US President Donald Trump responded by threatening to open fire on them.
He tweeted: “Just spoke to Governor Tm Walz and told him that the military is with him all the way.
“Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”
