Two American Staffordshire Terriers mauled a man, 81, and his wife, 74, in the street after they escaped their residence.

The elderly couple were visiting friends in Depla Street, Texas, US, when the two dogs began attacking them as they got out of their car.

The man, who has been named as Ramon Najeras, died from his injury. Meanwhile his wife, whose identity remains private, is currently in critical condition.

The owner of the dogs, Christian Alexander Moreno, 31, has been arrested and charged with attack by dangerous dog causing death and injury to an elderly person, according to San Antonio Police Department.

Moreno is now being held on a bond of $125,000 and his dogs are being held in kennels before being euthanised.

Moreno’s third dog, who was not present at the time of the attack, will also be euthanised.

A responder was bitten in the leg during the attempt to rescue the couple.

The attack was so violent that firefighters had to use pickaxes to force the dogs to release their grips on the pensioners.

At the scene of the incident, Charles Hood, San Antonio Fire Chief said: “As they [the firefighters] rounded the corner they could see a man being dragged by a dog. He was completely bloodied before they got out of the truck.

“This is not something that is normal for us. We don’t normally have to defend patients from animals or ourselves.

“The firefighters in this instance were very heroic fighting off these pit bulls with pickaxes and pipes to try and get to the patients.”

Prior to the attack, concerns had been raised several times with authorities over the behaviour of the dogs.

Neighbours had reported bites as well as incidences of animal neglect from Moreno.

The dogs were also impounded for a ‘mild bite’ incident in 2021 before returning to Morena.
