President Biden delivered an update on the Omicron variant and coronavirus pandemic during a White House conference. He urged the public to come forward to get their vaccinations. White House correspondents took the opportunity to grill the US President on his Build Back Better bill and how some of his Democrat allies were turning their backs on it. Mr Biden lashed out at critics of his plans, who say it would increase inflation, before yelling at the reporter because some parents are struggling to pay for medical supplies for their sick children.
Speaking at the White House, a reporter asked Mr Biden how does he build back trust among his Democrat colleagues after West Virginia senator Joe Manchin withdrew his support for his bill.
Mr Biden joked he was probably “not Irish because I don’t hold a grudge”.
The President defended his plan and wanted to explain how the bill would help people on the ground.
He explained: “Think about it in terms of you are a hard-working person and you’re making $60,000…
“And you’re worried about inflation, you should be worried about it because it is a devastating thing for people who are working class and middle class – it really hurts.”
Mr Biden began to ramble about getting people back into work and the cost of childcare if inflation went up before focusing in on medical bills.
He continued: “Insulin… you know what it costs somewhere between 10 cents and $10 to come up with formula.
“Now it is costing on average $640 a month… what do you do when you are a mom or a dad working for minimum wage busting your neck?
“You look at your kid and you know if you don’t get that drug for them… what happens?”
Mr Biden then began to get more irate towards the reporter as he became emotional on the topic.
Nancy Pelosi flustered as heckler shouts anti-Biden chants
He angrily stated: “They may go into a coma, or even die, I don’t want to put the kid’s life at stake.
“You strip away all the dignity of a parent looking at their child, I’m not joking about this!
“Imagine being a parent looking at their child and you can’t afford [medicine].”
Mr Biden’s outburst silenced the room before claiming his bill would reduce the living costs and prices for middle class and working-class families.
The US President then ended by simply saying: “I’m not supposed to be having this press conference.”
Mr Biden’s $2trillion infrastructure bill includes a wide range of public spending on transport, education, medical services and investment in other sectors.
Details of the bill include $110 billion for roads and bridges reworks, $39billion on modernising public transport, $65billion on improving broadband supply.
Mr Biden also has a Build Back Better framework which will provide free preschool for three and four-year-olds, child tax cuts, cuts in prescription drug costs and tax credits for those who shift to greener energy.
It is not the first time Mr Biden has raised his voice in the presence of journalists after he was grilled about reports he would compensate migrants who were split up at the border.
Former President Donald Trump allowed border forces to split up families who tried to enter the US illegal to try and deter them from making the journey.
During a White House press conference following his infrastructure bill announcements, Mr Biden was asked where did he “stand” on the reports which he branded as “garbage”.
Mr Biden once again rejected the suggestion and said: “Now here’s the thing, if, in fact, because of the outrageous behaviour of the last administration.
“You coming over the border whether it is illegal or not.
“And you lost your child! You lost your child, it’s gone!
“Then you deserve some kind of compensation no matter what.”
