Devastated mum of dead teen soldier who marched beside Queen’s coffin speaks out

The mum of the 18-year-old Guardsman found dead in his London barracks just days after walking behind the Queen's coffin at her funeral has told of her heartbreak at losing him.

Trooper Jack Burnell-Williams, 18, took on an important role at the Queen's state funeral last Monday (September 19), less than two weeks before he was found to have passed away.

Police and paramedics from London Ambulance Service were called to Hyde Park Barracks in Knightsbridge, London, at 3.48pm on Wednesday (September 28) in an attempt to save the young man.

However, there was nothing they could do and Wales-born Burnell-Williams was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Mum Laura, 42, said: “Never ever thought I would be saying this but we as a family are all heartbroken with the sudden passing of our wonderful son Jack Williams yesterday.”

It is not yet known exactly how Jack died, but it has been investigated by Metropolitan Police, who are not treating it as “suspicious”.

A spokesman said yesterday (September 30): “An 18-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

“The death was unexpected, it has been investigated and is not being treated as suspicious.

“Officers will assist with preparing a report for the coroner.”

And an Army spokesman said: "It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of Trooper Jack Burnell-Williams on 28 September 2022 at Hyde Park Barracks.

“Our thoughts are with the soldier's family and friends at this difficult time and we ask that their privacy is respected.”

On the day of the Queen's funeral, the dad Daniel Burnell wrote: "My son doing his duty for the Queen on her final journey. So proud of you Jak Williams xx very proud father xx"

The soldier, a member of the Household Cavalry, only turned 18 in June.

A coroner investigation will now take place.
