Brits freeze in -15C Arctic blast as Met confirms coldest night of the year

Brits shivered on the coldest night of the year so far, with The Met Office confirming the mercury plummeted to -15C.

Parts of the country found themselves suffering in the bone-chilling temperatures last night (Tuesday, March 7), making it the coldest weather recorded this year.

Temperatures at Kinbrace in the Scottish Highlands have set the low record overnight, with snow and ice set to batter the UK across the rest of the week.

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice were previously issued by the Met Office, warning that the "very chilly" start to the day would precede snowfall and ice.

Those weather warnings come as Met Office officials warn people of snow and ice that may cause disruptions to travel and could even cause injuries and power cuts.

From 9am today (Wednesday, March 8), weather warnings were in effect as forecasters predicted that most places in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of England will have snowfall.

That same snowfall will continue on, breaking through the sky and slapping down onto the pavement across Friday in most parts of the UK.

Birmingham is set for snowfall from 3am on Thursday all the way through to 6pm on Friday, while Bristol Airport has suspended flights due to the weather.

London will not fare any better either, with a weather warning for snow and ice covering the entire city from midnight on Wednesday to 9am on Thursday.

Daily Star previously reported the exact dates of when the wintry weather should wrap itself up, although it will likely be followed by bouts of heavy rain.

Around 80% of the country is set to be hit by rain on the morning of Monday, March 13, potentially bringing an end to snow and ice that the Met Office warned could cause "some injuries from slips and falls".

Three days of snow and ice are expected before that though, with the vast majority of the United Kingdom bracing itself for a flurry of Arctic troubles.
