Boris Johnson has been branded a "bellend" after he suggested that cash-strapped Brits should buy a new kettle to save £10 a year on energy bills.

The prime minister made the bizarre outburst as he compared the benefits of investing in nuclear plants to reducing energy bills during one of his final speeches.

It comes as the annual energy price cap is set to soar from £1,971 to £3,549 on October 1.

Speaking in Suffolk, he said: “If you have an old kettle which takes ages to boil, it may cost you £20 to replace it – but if you get a new one, you’ll save £10 a year every year on your electricity bill.”

Struggling families have already been left stressed by the looming price cap increase as pressure mounts on the Government to tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

The prime minister added that he was well aware of the financial hardship set for this autumn.

He said: “Families up and down this country are going to face a very tough winter and we just have to accept that.

“The Government really, really understands the difficulties that you are facing, we totally get it.”

Social media users were left baffled by the "out of touch" prime minister and said he was "rambling" like a "mad man".

One person wrote: "Genius: Boris Johnson single-handedly solves cost-of-living crisis by telling Britons to buy a cheaper kettle."

Another said: "Is Johnson mocking us in his final days as PM? How could anyone with any shred of intelligence or decency suggest families, who are faced with impossible energy price rises, save £10 a year by buying a new kettle?"

A third user commented: "Boris Johnson wouldn’t have a hope of surviving if he were poor."

While another said: "Boris Johnson is really out there telling people to buy a new kettle to save money on energy bills. From a man who has never struggled with money. Bellend."
