New plans were discussed last month which would see drivers being charged £3.50 for simply driving into London. During a recent Transport for London (TfL) finance committee meeting, it was estimated that a £500million-a-year funding hole would be left from Ultra Low Emission Zone charges.

The ULEZ was expanded in October with most of Greater London now being part of the car tax zone.

Any drivers with non-compatible cars are charged £12.50 per day for driving within the zone.

The £15 fee for the Congestion Charge also remains in operation.

With the gap in TfL finances, a new boundary charge may be considered to fill the gap in revenue.

The current plans would see people charged £3.50 a day to drive into the capital from outside the London border.

According to MyLondon, the charge of £3.50 a day would rise to £5.50 for vehicles that weren’t compliant with the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone.

Peter Fortune, the Conservative London Assembly Member for Bexley and Bromley, has launched a petition, calling on the London Mayor to scrap the proposals.

He said: “Every day, people from Dartford, Sevenoaks, Surrey and Kent, drive into Bexley and Bromley.

Now 51 Conservative politicians have signed a letter calling on the Mayor to drop his boundary charge “threat” in the ongoing bailout negotiations.

Signatories include high profile MPs Iain Duncan Smith, Theresa Villiers, Minister for London Paul Scully and former AM member and London Mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey.
